What is a Carbon Footprint?

Your Carbon Footprint is a measure of how much carbon dioxide (CO2) per year is emitted into the atmosphere as a result of your activities. It is built up by considering your day-to-day actions and applying a CO2 emissions calculation to each of these. These include:

• The annual electricity and gas usage for heating, lighting and powering your household.
• The fuel used for all the car journeys you undertake.
• A share of the emissions created by bus, train, boat and plane journeys you take.
• The carbon impact of your shopping and consuming.
• The impact of the production, use and disposal of your household waste.

How do I work it out?

To complete the Carbon Footprint Calculations as accurately as you can, it helps if you have your Gas/Electricity or other fuel bills for the past year to hand plus the approximate mileage and fuel consumption of your car(s). Don't worry if you don't have these available though, you'll be able to provide estimates of your energy and fuel usage to give you an approximate calculation.

So what do I do once I've calculated my Carbon Footprint?

With your footprint calculated, you can firstly see how you compare to other individuals in the UK. Get your friends and family to do theirs too.
